This occasion marked the first time that a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services naturalization ceremony was held at City Hall. Sixty-six candidates for naturalization representing twenty-five countries of origin took the solemn oath of citizenship to officially become New Americans. The ceremony was followed by a reception to kick off the eighth annual Citizenship Month, a citywide celebration of “the many faces of Houston” set for November. The reception featured Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner's presentation of the 2016 Citizen of the Year Awards.
